A number of underappreciated story elements for your consideration.
Q: What happens to all the people I keep recruiting?
A: Where do you think all the graves you keep having to visit come from?
Q: How are they feeding all these monsters and people?
A: Well, the consumables are only one part of the monsters you’re defeating, judging from the Pandemonium Token event where it blows an enemy party into a handful of them. The rest of the body might as well go to some use.
I mean, they are called consumables.
Q: Why does everybody hate the gambling dwarves?
A: Considering how the king deals with political opponents and renegade mages, I imagine debt collection to be a very serious business indeed.
Q: Clearly, the castle was complete during the previous king’s reign, or there wouldn’t have been dead-end hallways. Why did all the NPCs close up shop and leave, and why did the former king only leave you enough cores and resources to start a single monster?
A: A very serious business, indeed.
